I can remember since my primary school days that I was always somewhat different from other people and this feeling has persisted right into my adulthood. For starters the littlest things always seemed to bother me and I would react very badly and sadly woe unto you if you were the target of my reaction. Sadly the people closest to me paid the heaviest price.

Am seated at a clinic waiting to see my counselor for my usual outpatient sessions, then I hear this lady who I think is in total denial of what is going on with the daughter, try to explain to her friend, in her opinion, what she thinks is wrong with the daughter. I start getting really upset by listening to the conversation and I start to wonder why, then it hits me, my parents for the longest time were in denial of the fact that I had turned out to be an addict. They told lies, they covered up my misconducts, they put me on lock down and all this while all I needed was help!

My name is Travor and for the longest time I have struggled with my addiction. It all began with alcohol but later progressed into hard drugs and prescription medicine. I have hurt, disappointed and done despicable things to those who had nothing but love for me. I am grateful to those who have managed to forgive me and those who are still trying to put my transgression behind them. Am the third born and only boy to a family of four siblings, i could say that monetary wise, my family is extremely rich, but throughout my struggle I have learned to appreciate that having lots of money does not make one rich or happy or satisfied.

As an addict growing up, and being the “identified patient” until I was around 40 years old, I had it down to a science. I was the glue that held the family together. I knew my role and played it well, never a lie left untold or a family member left un-manipulated. Through my years of using as an adult, I got married and had kids. My mom always threatened, “Just wait until your kids are teenagers, you’ll get what you gave ten-folds”.

Alchoholics

Today there are many who could be considered alcoholics, those with a serious addiction to alcohol, and there are many that simply abuse the substance without actually being addicted. In most cases this causes severe problems for the person and for those around him or her.Often alcoholics can spend far too much money on drinking, can become abusive and even violent when under the influence, can put others at risk by driving while intoxicated, and can seriously damage their health in the process. Living with alcoholics can be very difficult if not downright impossible, and in some cases it’s best to remove children especially from such a home. However there is help available for alcoholics who want to receive and act on that help. These are key points because no one can do the work for them; they can get all the necessary information for how to control their habit, but it’s up to them to use that information properly.
